I was around 7 years old when I first went to the YMCA which is located in the next town over from where I lived. My grandparents were very big on keeping us active in sports when we weren’t in school. The YMCA gave us that opportunity. My cousins and I were there almost every day and it was also the foundation of where I found my love for Volleyball. I played for several years and eventually started to assist in coaching the younger teams. It was a place where I could go and be myself. It kept not just me, but a lot of kids out of trouble. The YMCA really gave not just my family but the kids in my community a chance to hang around with each other and help each other grow as adults. It gave us a safe place that we did not have to worry about anything.

Thanks to my upbringing with YMCA I am now coaching at the Chandler YMCA. My niece started playing volleyball for NYS and they needed a coach, so I volunteered to coach her team. After one season my niece did not want to play for NYS anymore. I talked with her parents about signing her up at the YMCA and they agreed. My niece then asked me if I would coach her team at the YMCA and I did not hesitate to accept it.

I was fortunate enough to have people to take chances on me at the YMCA and I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to give those chances to someone else.

I have now been at the YMCA coaching competitive Volleyball for 10 seasons now. I started off with one team and now I have two teams (7-9 competitive and 4-6 competitive). The staff at the Y are very easy to work with and they are always willing to help in every way they can. At about 3 seasons in, my husband Timothy Ah Quin (who is my assistant coach) and I were really concerned about our health and wanted to start taking the steps towards taking care of ourselves. We then signed up for a membership at the YMCA and have been with them ever since. We work out about 5 nights a week and I must say that we are really satisfied with the gym. The other members are so nice very welcoming. The number of resources and events that the YMCA offers really fit what we were looking for. Our family enjoys it very much, especially the kids. They love going to the play center. We have also taken advantage of the sports that they offer, and I have two nieces in volleyball and a nephew in basketball. I also have 2 nephews and a niece in the swimming program here as well. It has become like a second home to our family, and we are very fortunate to have a place like I had when I was younger.

The way this world is going today it takes more people like the people at the YMCA to make a difference in each other’s lives. I am thankful for the lessons learned as a little girl because without them I would not be able to help others today. When my players smile and thank me for believing in them, that is the best compliment a coach can ever get. I have had the best players and parents here. I’ve watched my players grow as young adults, and I can’t wait to see where their future takes them. Just to be a part of their journey is what makes it all worth it.

The YMCA has been a big part of my life starting from when I was a little girl.
