Deb Callison has been a member of the Desert Foothills Family YMCA for five years. When she joined little did she know the adventure she would take. She started taking fitness classes and getting to know other members, the staff and the instructors. Soon the desire to be fit was contagious and she started a weight loss journey, taking off a large amount of weight and as time went slowly seeing it come back on. But she has still not given up hope and continues to take classes and work on her journey with the help of the same members, staff and instructors. The Y is the one place you become family with a large community of people who are just happy to see you keep trying.
Deb was a water fitness instructor while in the military and was hired to teach classes at the Y. Because of her witty demeanor and ease with members she soon became a favorite. In the past 2 years she has taken on Jumpstart and Cycle classes also. “When I first joined the Y what got me excited about the classes were the amazing instructors and how welcoming and encouraging they would be regardless your fitness level. Seeing them held me accountable and made me come everyday. I hope that I have the same effect on people.”
Since joining, Deb also sees a personal trainer and has become stronger that she could ever imagine. Her cholesterol is no longer an issue, she is no longer pre-diabetic, and she hikes proudly up various mountains in the area without pause. “The YMCA is an amazing organization that really goes out of its way in the community. I love the people I work with, the members I see daily, and the potential members I see on the streets. “ Heroes are made by the path they choose, not the powers they are graced with.- Brodi Ashton
