Pete is a volunteer youth basketball coach at the Desert Foothills Family YMCA. Over the past five years, Pete has enjoyed making a difference in the lives of many youth including his own three boys Cody, Luke and Joey. “I enjoy volunteering at the Y. It gives me an opportunity to be with my kids. My dad did that for me when I was young and it meant a lot.”

The Y is committed to nurturing the potential of children and has a unique approach to youth sports. “The focus is on instilling values such as teamwork and sportsmanship. It is less about competition and more about learning new skills, developing confidence, cultivating respect and creating positive relationships. All kids have equal opportunity to play and to grow in their individual skill level. Everyone is accepted and treated equally.”

The Y recognizes that in order to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. Pete observes, “At the Y, you see all demographics of life. The Y steps up and offers help to those who are financially burdened. I really don’t want to see any kids left out and the Y makes sure that doesn’t happen.”

Volunteers are vital to the Y. Not only do they positively impact children and families by the giving of their time and talents, they receive fulfillment through their service. Pete believes, “if I can make even a small impression on kids that makes a difference in their lives, I am more than gratified.”
