When he sustained an injury while running, he rediscovered his love of swimming. “My injury triggered me to stop running and focus more on swimming.”
Rico grew up at the YMCA in Michigan City, Indiana where he played basketball and spent a lot of time. “ I loved being at the Y!”

With his love for the Y, Rico and his family joined the Desert Foothills YMCA when it opened in 2009.

His children Duncan, Kierra, Shea, and Molly participated in aquatics, sports and summer camp programs. Kierra and Duncan even began working for the Y as lifeguards and Duncan is still a current guard.

Competition continues to be a passion for Rico as seen in his recent quest to swim 100 miles in 100 consecutive days at the Y. Not only did he accomplish that goal but has done a mile a day for 200 out of 202 days! “The two days I missed were Holidays that the Y was closed. The Y is a second family to me. I’ve gotten to know other lap swimmers and it is like a little community.

“I see exercising at the Y as something I GET to do; not something I HAVE to do. I am trying to instill that healthy living philosophy in my kids as well. I also hope to inspire others to swim. It really calms the mind.”
Next time you are at the Y, stop by the pool and meet Rico!
