It is funny how we go from celebrating summer time and the freedom it offers in our youth to celebrating as parents the routine that the school year brings.

It is time for us to get back to our routines of getting the kids up and dressed for school and out the door on time to meet the bus or make it through the parent drop-off line before the start of school and then getting ourselves to work.

Enforcing bedtime is always much easier during the school year, as we can explain that school starts early and you need to get up. With our children back to school, it is time to start looking at after-school activities.

Don’t forget to make healthy living and family activities part of your routine.

Fall sports are upon us. Basketball, volleyball, soccer, deck hockey and cheer are registering now. After- school care with transportation to the Y is also open for enrollment. Don’t forget about teenagers, too. Youth and Government groups are forming in August and are sure to keep your young leaders engaged in our community and growing their minds.

August is still hot, and with the distraction of back to school and new routines, drownings still happen. The majority of drownings actually occur in August. This has to do with kids having a greater comfort level around water from swimming all summer long and parents being distracted by new routines. Please help us keep families safe and become a water watcher. Ask your Y how you can be a water watcher.

We always want to be the best YMCA we can be. That means we have a constant desire to get better and do better. I want to hear from you. As the executive director of your Y, I want to make sure we are providing the absolute best service possible at all times.

I can’t promise we will never make a mistake, but what I can promise is that we will always work hard and do our best to fix the mistake and make sure we do not make the same mistake twice. To help us get better, we are asking for your help in focusing our improvement efforts in our Y.

You should have received an e-mail or text recently from a third-party company, called SEER Analytics, with a link to a member experience survey. Please make sure to complete this survey by Aug. 16. Your feedback will be used to help us get better at serving you.

Finally, I want to thank you for being a member of our YMCA and helping us strengthen the foundations of community.
