He loved being in the water and showed absolutely no fear. At age 2, Nabor started swim lessons and was swimming full stroke freestyle before he turned 3.<\/p>\n

Every two weeks, Nabor would pass to the next level of swim lessons. By age 5, he had passed all of the swim levels except for the lifeguarding course. The lifeguards suggested he join a swim team. So at 6, he began swimming for the Tolleson Tidalwaves. In his first swim meet, he finished with three first-place ribbons. That is when he fell in love with the sport of swimming.<\/p>\n

When Nabor was in first grade, his family moved to Goodyear, where he joined the Goodyear Sharks rec swim team. By the time he was 9 or 10 years old, he dominated the rec swim league. People thought he was a club swimmer.<\/p>\n

That was when someone suggested the YMCA Westside Silver Fins.<\/h3>\n

Nabor started swimming with the team under Coach Ryan at age 10. He only lasted about two months and then quit. Although he loved Coach Ryan, he wasn\u2019t ready to be swimming full time His parents did not force him to keep swimming because they knew he would want to go back; he just loved the water too much.<\/p>\n

At age 11, Nabor swam for the Goodyear Sharks again, but this time he swam against the 13- to 14-year-olds. Once again, he was unbeatable. People accused him of cheating because they thought he was a club swimmer even though he was swimming an age group up and had only done club for a couple of months. After dominating the 13- to 14-year-olds as an 11-year-old, he decided he was ready to go back to the Silver Fins.<\/p>\n

Nabor was the “new” kid who was making “A” finals his first year at the Arizona State Championships. Nabor won his first age group state title at 12. He then won his first senior state title at 16 along with his first high school state championship. Nabor\u2019s biggest win came earlier this year at Sectionals Meet in Phoenix, where he won the 200 IM and 100 fly. Nabor also recently attended the USA Swimming National Select Camp at the National Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He learned a lot and was a great representative of the Silver Fins during the camp. Coach Meg Barta, one of our Silver Fin assistant coaches, also attended the camp with Nabor.<\/p>\n

Six Questions for Nabor:<\/p>\n

  1. What is your favorite thing about being a YMCA Westside Silver Fin?<\/strong>
    \nThe one thing I love about the Westside Silver Fins is how close-knit the team truly is. Overall, our team isn’t the biggest, but we do have a group of kids that put in work day and night so that we can achieve our goals together. That is why I believe we have seen so much success in the past couple of seasons.<\/li>\n
  2. What attracted you to swimming and what keeps you coming back to the pool every day?<\/strong>
    \nI love the competition in this sport. It\u2019s incredible how racing someone can drastically improve your times at the end of the race. When I race, I sort of feel my mind fade from reality and my only focus is on the person I see in my peripheral vision. I don’t think any other sport can provide an experience that swimming can. This, and the people I see every day keep me drawn to the pool and get me up for practice in the mornings.<\/li>\n
  3. What is your favorite swim practice set?<\/strong>
    \nI love IM sets that involve 200 sprints. There’s something about the mixture of strokes and the fast swimming that really get me going. One set I really like is:3 rounds of:6 x 25 butterfly on 0:25 holding stroke count
    \n3 x 50 backstroke on 0:50 working the tempo of the arms
    \n2 x 75 breaststroke on 1:15 working on gliding and counting strokes
    \n1 x 150 freestyle on 1:40 with each 50 getting faster
    \n1 x 200 IM fast\/race on 4:00<\/p>\n

    Total distance = 2400 yards<\/li>\n

  4. What are your goals in swimming and in life?<\/strong>
    \nMy most important long-term goal for the sport of swimming is to earn a scholarship to a Division 1 college. I really want my degree to be paid for so that it sets me up nicely for real life. Having debt directly out of college is not something I desire.For the sport itself, making an A-final or even winning an NCAA championship would be pretty cool. Not many people get to wear a ring proving they did something spectacular in college. Anything else relating to adulthood after college is up for grabs. I don’t know what I want to do as a profession or livelihood just yet, but I do believe it will revolve around math.<\/li>\n
  5. If you could meet one athlete and have a sit-down dinner with him or her, who would it be? And why? <\/strong>
    \nIf I could meet and have dinner with one athlete, it would have to be Caeleb Dressel. I would want to know what it was like to have such an amazing short-course season but then go into Nationals with so much pressure and expectations on your shoulders and again produce some amazing performances.<\/li>\n
  6. The YMCA\u2019s voice words are; DETERMINED, NURTURING, GENUINE, HOPEFUL AND WELCOMING. Which of those words to you best describe the atmosphere at the Southwest Valley YMCA? And why?<\/strong>
    \n\u201cGenuine\u201d would have to be the best voice word that describes the Southwest Valley YMCA. In my opinion, you won’t see as much activity at any other YMCA compared to one afternoon at our pool. There are kids going through swim lessons, two or three Silver Fin groups practicing, high school swim and dive teams in the water, as well as our members swimming and having fun; it always seems to be busy. Even though our pool is really busy, everyone gets along and is genuinely happy to share space and help each other.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
