The Valley of the Sun YMCA is giving away 2,000 free swim lessons this spring.

The free lessons will take place between May 13 and 23 and are open to any beginning swimmer, from children 6 months old to adults.

It’s all part of an effort to end child drownings. According to the YMCA, drowning is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 4.

Registration for the free lessons began Wednesday at noon. Parents interested in signing up their children should visit their local branch’s welcome center for more information.

The lessons will be offered at 13 Valley-wide locations and do not include Flagstaff or Yuma.
