The Valley of the Sun YMCA is excited to launch our new senior Outreach Initiative! We miss our Y family. The Y hopes to be able to help comfort our Active Older Adults and foster a sense of “staying connected” during this time.
In the coming weeks, Y staff and volunteers will be checking in with our existing Y members who are interested in joining our outreach initiative. Those participating will receive phone calls, text messages, FaceTime/Skype calls and/or emails from a caring Y staff member or volunteer.
These “check ins” will serve as a reminder to our members that the Y is here to emotionally support them during the closure, and will be here for them in the case that any needs arise. Our volunteers will be checking on general welfare and noting any items or resources that our members may need. Our overarching goal is to keep members connected to our Y community.
We want to take this opportunity for all Active Older Adults to continue focusing on their health & wellness at home! We have multiple options available to you during this time to stay active including virtual at-home workouts and live class experiences. We want to help keep you accountable and active during this time, therefore please record your workouts daily so we can help monitor your progress and help keep our Y family connected.
Our partner, SilverSneakers, offers a wide variety of FREE workouts on their Facebook page. You’ll find everything on the “videos” tab. Please let us know if you find a new favorite exercise!
If you are a senior in our community who needs our help, regardless if you are a Y member or not, please reach out to us. Call (480)596-9622 or email email@example.com with any questions, thoughts, or concerns. Social responsibility is one of the pillars of our mission, and since 1892, we have existed to serve our valley community. We will get through this together.
Below, we have compiled a list of resources that may be helpful for our older adult population. As a Y, it is our responsibility to ensure that our seniors get all of the help and resources that they may need during this unsettling time.
- CDC Recommendations for Older Adults During the Coronavirus pandemic
Older adults, 65 years and older, are at higher risk for illness. These tips will help you stay healthy and safe.
- Nutrition Programs for Seniors
Find food and nutrition programs that focus on the needs of older Americans, age 60 and over.
