Y Member Spotlight: Gracy Ruby

Grace Ruby is turning 95 in just a few months and has been a member for over 10 years! Her sister encouraged her to join over ten years ago, by saying to her, "you have to keep moving!". In Grace’s early life, she was a fashion designer and a seamstress. Grace is still fashionable to this day, even at The Y! Grace also is a cancer survivor, of both Breast & Ovarian Cancer. "Wouldn’t everyone want to be healthy? I tell you, it’s a lot better than being lethargic,"Grace Ruby Said. In 2014, Grace won a national award for overcoming her adversity! The Richard L. Swanson Inspiration Award from Silver Sneakers for maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and inspiring others through exercise to improve their quality of life. This award was given out to ONE person in the country, and all of her peers & Y staff supported her by voting online! 2-3 times a year, the whole class goes out and has breakfast after their class. Grace said her class is a real community! We love seeing Grace’s smile around the Y every week!

"I’ve been given a new lease on life," said Grace Ruby of her award. "Without all the people in my class, this wouldn’t have happened."
