Embracing Yoga to Strengthen the Self

For centuries, Yoga has been used by many people around the world as a practice for self-control, self-awareness, and self-healing.

According to the Oxford dictionary, Yoga is “a Hindu philosophy that teaches you how to control your body and mind in the belief that you can become united with the spirit of the universe in this way.” In other words, by controlling the body and the mind, one can become one with the universe and live a balanced life.

Practicing for even 5 or 10 minutes daily can significantly impact your quality of life and health. Among the benefits, we find:

  1. Lower your blood pressure
  2. Boost your energy
  3. Calms your mind
  4. Better sleep
  5. Getting stronger and more.

FLOW YOGA

Around the valley, the different YMCA locations have programs for all classes, from Flow Yoga to Healthy Back Yoga. At Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, Shauna Anderson, who has been a member for 11 years at the YMCA, teaches different classes, especially Flow Yoga.

The YMCA offers this class every Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. The classes are available virtually for those that prefer to practice from the comfort of home. To Shauna, Yoga “really hits all the foundations that our body needs: strength, flexibility, and endurance.” It is the perfect practice for those looking to improve flexibility, balance, and tone while strengthening core muscle groups in a less impacted way. Also, it’s a class open for any age or fitness level, and it doesn’t require previous training. All you need is, as many Yogis say, “an open heart.”

Give one of our classes a try, and experience the amazing benefits that an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice can have for you.
