- 65 years and older, and in an independent living situation
- Live in a qualifying area
- Participate in an initial home visit and assessment

What is Y-OPAS? Y-OPAS (Outreach Programs for Aging Seniors) is a free volunteer-driven program by Valley of the Sun YMCA that helps seniors aged 65+ in Ahwatukee, Goodyear area, and Scottsdale maintain independent living through transportation, errands, companionship, and more.

Who can become a Y-OPAS client? Clients must be 65 or older, live independently in a qualifying area, complete a home assessment, and be able to enter/exit a vehicle with minimal assistance.

How can I volunteer with Y-OPAS? Volunteers must be 21+, enjoy working with seniors, and (for drivers) have a valid license, insurance, and reliable car. Opportunities include transportation, grocery shopping, friendly visits, social events, technical/business help, and office support. To get started, click on the Volunteer Now  button for your area.

What areas does Y-OPAS serve? We currently serve Ahwatukee (Phoenix), Goodyear (Southwest Valley), and Scottsdale.

Is there a cost for Y-OPAS services? All services are free except for luncheons, which is typically $15.  Y-OPAS is supported by grants, volunteers, donations, and community partners.

How do I sign up as a Volunteer or Client? To become a Volunteer,  click on the VOLUNTEER  NOW button for your preferred location. To become a Client, select the BECOME A CLIENT button.

What volunteer training is provided? Volunteers receive orientation and ongoing support through the Y-OPAS handbook and monthly newsletters.

Are there opportunities to meet other volunteers Yes! Y-OPAS has regular meetups where volunteers can share their experiences.
