Scott M. Spangler Endowment Fund

During his life, Scott Spangler was a tremendous friend of the Valley of the Sun YMCA. One of the Y’s biggest advocates, he was a strategic leader and generous donor of his time and financial support over many years.

Scott knew the value of the YMCA firsthand. Growing up in a small town in Ohio, he was a “Y kid.” He spoke often about the very different outcomes he experienced by belonging to the Y in his youth, and the value of character-building that is integral to every YMCA program.

Scott said, “It doesn’t matter where you come from. Everyone needs a person or an organization to believe in you and to believe in your future. That is what the Y did for me.” Scott “paid it forward” many times over and worked hard to ensure that this Y will be here for youth and families in our community.

In Fall 2020, the Valley of the Sun YMCA
was honored to announce a
$1 Million Gift from Mrs. Jean Spangler
and Family to permanently establish the
Scott M. Spangler Endowment Fund

Jean, Karen, Scott Jr. and Drew committed this gift in memory and in honor of Scott’s life-long passion and love for the Y enabling youth and families an opportunity to succeed for generations to come.

In keeping with Scott’s community spirit and vision to engage others in funding the Y mission, Jean Spangler and Amy Thurston will co-chair an outreach effort to raise additional philanthropic gifts for the Valley of the Sun YMCA Scott M. Spangler Endowment Fund.

“It was Scott’s wish that the Valley of the Sun YMCA remain strong forever, and it was our family’s wish that this gift be made in Scott’s name to honor his love for the Y, support social service programs, and ensure a fiscally healthy future for the Valley of the Sun YMCA.”
Jean Spangler

“It’s challenging to honor a guy like Scott. He was remarkable on so many levels. Good friend, mentor, businessman, father, husband and as I used to call him jokingly, the world’s oldest living Boy Scout. I have joined with Jean to try to make a greater impact by raising additional funds for the Scott M. Spangler Endowment Fund. We would be honored if you joined us in this endeavor, and consider making a gift to this fund.”
