As an organization with more than a century of experience in caring for our community, the Valley of the Sun YMCA responds quickly to these challenges; creatively expanding our programs to meet our community when, where and how we are needed most.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we can continue to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of every YMCA child and family. We are working to pave the way for a bright future for all of our community no matter their age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status.
Advancing Childhood Development
Every dollar invested in social/emotional learning (SEL) improves lifetime outcomes for youth, and prepares young people for success in a complex world. Y programs are committed to executing experiences rich in SEL for this reason; youth do better when they have supportive adults nurturing their potential. As academic demands evolve within our education system, the Y will continue to prioritize education, SEL and safety for the children in our care. Help the Y provide these opportunities for every child in our community regardless of their inability to pay.
Developing Community Leaders
By 2030, the majority of the U.S. population will be young adults between 18 and 35 years of age. As the world grows in complexity and teens become more isolated, providing programs that build a sense of belonging and welcome young people to develop their self-identity is increasingly important. By investing in the YMCA’s leadership development programs, you are developing our community’s future leaders. Help the Y provide spaces for our teens who may be struggling with self-esteem and depression, or difficult school or family environments.
Drowning Prevention
The world is 70% water and children are 100% curious. Childhood drownings are the leading cause of accidental death of children in Arizona under the age of five. We provide programs that provide critical safety around water knowledge and teach swimming skills. Programs range from group and private swim lessons to collaborating with schools to deliver drowning prevention programs. Help the Y be a leader in drowning prevention programming in 2023.
Strengthening Families
Raising a family is challenging today, and for those who have experienced trauma the statistics are working against their success. We support parents in creating stronger families to lower child poverty, reduce social-isolation, increase positive health outcomes, and increase family income. From providing affordable childcare to youth sports to membership, every family is welcome to come together in fellowship and well-being at the Y. Help the Y provide a place for families to spend time together.
Promoting Healthy Living
In Arizona, over 50% of residents have at least one chronic disease. Y membership and wellness programs can improve the health and well-being of our community to reduce chronic disease, obesity, and improve mental health. Help the Y provide financial assistance for seniors, families, military families and foster youth so that we give access to facilities and programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
ENGAGING OPPORTUNITY YOUTH
In Arizona, one in eight people ages 16-24 are unemployed and not in school. They are more likely to have worsening health and rely on government support. The Y partners with opportunity youth in the community to provide pathways to employment, shelter, food and a solid future. This population includes young men and women who have faced significant roadblocks to academic, job and life success and who may be navigating educational challenges, pregnancy, homelessness, disabilities or the juvenile justice system. Help the Y serve this growing population with critically needed services.
SUPPORTING SENIORS
Seniors comprise 18% of the Arizona population and have experienced increased isolation due to the pandemic. Many seniors in the community lack the resources to engage virtually. As they remain cautious against COVID-19, the Y is passionate about supporting this population. We work to reduce depression and fear through outreach programs and safe social gatherings. Help the Y continue our senior outreach program to connect with those who need a supportive friend or voice during this uncertain time.
